Mattias Braach-Maksvytis - Open A Continental team

My name is Mattias Braach-Maksvytis. I’m 25 years old, based

in Sydney, and am currently undertaking a Doctor of

Physiotherapy at Macquarie University.

My parents have retold stories of me climbing things (houses,

trees, etc.) since I was 4, so I guess I’ve always been

interested in climbing. I started indoors about 14 years ago, but

I only got serious about it after my first overseas climbing trip in

I work, set, and train at Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym St Peters

- a.k.a. my 2 nd home, and I’m sponsored by Madrock and BJR

Climbing Equipment.

I’m proud of my work-study- climbing balance to be honest. I’ve

developed boulders up to V12 (mainly dynos, unsurprisingly) in

a few different countries, climbed V13, and have been on the

youth and open Australian team numerous times. My goals are

mainly specific to climbing a certain problem or route, but I’d

like to climb 8C/V15 and 9a/35, and develop more areas

around the world. Winning some competitions would be pretty

neat too.

I’ve travelled around the world specifically for climbing, and as

such have had the opportunity to meet and climb with a lot of

world-class athletes. My idols are Joe Kinder, Jimmy Webb,

Jan Hojer, Janja Garnbret, other people with names that start

with J, and pretty much anyone who has devoted any part of

their life to the sport and its development.

Competitions haven’t been a focus of mine in recent years, but

I’m slowly coming to rediscover their importance in making me

a well-rounded athlete. I don’t have any real competition rituals,

but I love good pre-climb chicken roll and I always try to go in

with a positive mindset and just have as much fun as possible.
