Annabelle Cleary - Youth A Lead International Boulder Continental

What sparked your interest in climbing and how long have you been climbing?

I started climbing as a part of school sport. A friend and I selected it because we thought it would be a good partner sport but then we became addicted and started doing it outside of school too. That was in year 7 so I have now been climbing for 4 years and competing for 2.

Your home gym is?

Pulse Climbing in Newcastle however my coach is  Alex McInnes and I often train at gyms in Sydney.

What are you proud of achieving so far and what are your goals?

So far in my climbing I am really proud of achieving a place on the 2017 Australian Youth team for lead climbing. I was also extremely happy with my placing in other disciplines at nationals coming 3rd in bouldering, 2nd in speed and 2nd overall. It’s my ultimate goal now to train as hard as I can over the next 3 months and try and make the semi-finals at the youth world cup in Austria. The competition in Innsbruck is definitely going to be a big challenge for me but I’m really excited to experience that next level of competition and also just to push my training to new limits not only for this particular comp but also to see how it will transfer to my outdoor climbing as well as across other disciplines.

Do you have any idols?

I would have to say that my biggest idol is Lynn Hill. I really look up to the way she deals with the mental side of climbing and her determination in achieving her goals is something I find really inspiring as well as how her natural love for climbing keeps her grounded even in competitive situations.

Do you have any sponsors?

My home gym Pulse Climbing.

Something interesting.

After discovering climbing, the addictiveness of its physical and mental challenges has kept me coming back for more for almost four years now. I am excited to keep training hard and push my body to new limits to see what I am capable of not only in comps but out on the rock too!
